Bright Hope Christian Academy, Udung Uko

BHCA Udung Uko is a primary AND secondary school with 154 students, 28 staff. Reverend Emmanuel oversees this school. This school was built and run by International Childcare Ministries. Schools For Africa began overseeing the school in 2022. This school is near the Jesus Bridge. Jesus said, "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Matt 11:28. There is a new bridge deep in the palmetto jungles of southern Nigeria, a bridge spanning over 300 feet of water and impenetrable swamp, a bridge from today's world to an ancient, primitive place where homes are of rushes and mud, men wear wrap-arounds and children run naked and free. A village knowing only fishing, hand-carved canoes, nets, hooks, bait and racks of smoking fish. There is for the first time a bridge to Esuk Ekong fishing village. It is the Jesus Bridge. In 2016, a team of nine men and women from California and Washington State led by Rev Derek Isaksen, pastor of Real Family Free Methodist Church in San Jose, Clifornia, joined Nigerian Free Methodists and volunteers from Nigeria's Youth Corps to build a 300 foot long bridge to connect the fishing village of Esuk Ekong to the mainland, to allow women to take heir fish to market and their children to attend Bright Hope Christian Academy, the ICCM school at Udung Ukoh. Besides building the bridge, Rev. Derek and his team provided a new floor, doors and windows for the Esuk Ekong Free Methodist Church and completed the small parsonage. They funded the drilling of a borehole in the church compound, along with two large tanks and a generator, all of which will provide the Esuk Ekong community with good, clean, drinking water. The team did this all for Jesus and for the children of Esuk Ekong, children whose lives will be forever changed as they cross the bridge into a new world of uniforms, textbooks, friends of other tribes, reading, writing and arithmetic! One small boy at Esuk Ekong, a boy we renamed 'Silas', was given not only the opportunity for a new life, but the opportunity to live. We discovered Silas covered with sores, starving, half-naked, tied hand and foot to a post in his grass shack. With no father or mother and a grandmother who was too busy to care, Silas was tied up all day and night to keep him from going from house to house looking for food. We met with the village chief and with his permission talked to the grandmother, loosed Silas' bonds and brought him a plate of food. For the next days of the project Silas stayed very close by our side and pretty much spent all his time eating or storing food, as anyone would do if he'd been starved all his life. Silas doesn't speak, has few social skills and walks in a slightly twisted manner. It may take a long time for him to recover from the years of abuse he has suffered, but there is real hope for Silas, because Rev. Derek and Rev. Kevin and Val Williams are going to help immediately by moving him to a boarding facility near Bright Hope Christian Academy, getting him to a doctor and therapist and into school. The prison doors have opened for little Silas. His chains are off; he's been set free. Rev. Derek and Real Family Free Methodist Church also plan to sponsor many of the other Esuk Ekong children who will attend Bright Hope. There are signboards at either end of the Jesus Bridge, each illustrated with a long, horizontal cross leading from 'man' at the foot of the cross to God at the head, with the words 'The Jesus Bridge' on the cross beam. There is a Bible verse on each signboard and the message, 'Jesus Loves You'. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." John 14:6

Partners in Progress Primary School

Partners In Progress School is HUGE, with 354 children, and 10 teachers. The school and a healthcare clinic were built in August 2025. The government was SO HAPPY that we came, they agreed to pay teacher salaries! UNHEARD OF! Their dream of a school has come true. They through us a HUGE party, gave Phyllis a COW, and slaughtered a cow to feed the community! The new school director said that children are coming to Partners in Progress from as far away as 15 kilometers away! The community consists of a Fulani village on one side of the road, living in peace with another tribe on the other side of the road! Here's a great story from Missionary Phyllis Sortor about the school: This is my new friend Abubakar, a Jarawa man in this community. I asked him to share the comments he'd made to me yesterday, and he graciously agreed. Abubakar's message: "I'm very happy with this project. We have stayed for a long time, looking for a school in this village - we couldn't get it. And now, just like a dream, we saw these people. Others in the village say we should take it as a play (not real). But one day we saw it with our naked eyes. We saw your materials for building a school. We are really happy. We have really no words to say but thank you for doing this job. I hope to say to the Director of Schools for Africa, may God help them and guide them, protect them from any calamity. The entire people of this village, this community, they are very happy. Pleasure and joy. Thank you so much. Thank you. God bless you."

Bright Hope Christian Academy Primary AND Secondary School (aka Hope Academy)

Bright Hope Christian Academy Primary and Secondary School has 318 students and 23 teachers! This is the FIRST school Phyllis opened with International Childcare Ministries. Hope Academy Emiworo was established February, 2008 in a small village, Emiworo, by Rev. Phyllis Sortor alongside with her husband, Jim Sortor, with four classrooms. The school graduated it's first set of students in 2012/2013, and secondary school (high school) started that very year. Now the school fully runs nursery, primary and secondary school. ICCM and Phyllis ran the school until 2016. In 2021, Schools for Africa took over the administration of the school again. Emiworo is a small community with about 4,800 population. The community operates two major political parties and has a peaceful atmosphere even during elections, which can be tumultuous. The Emiworo community is having an economic downturn because the country (Nigeria) as a whole is facing inflation. Most people in Emiworo community are farmers, fishermen, small business owners, and government workers.

New Okigwe School

New Okigwe School was built in 2023, and now has 165 students! It is a large school, and the area here is quickly growing. We will install a second borehole here to meet the needs of the growing community. Here is the miraculous story of New Okigwe from Missionary Phyllis Sortor: Ok, now that I'm calm, I'll retell the miracle that just happened this morning. Some time ago we were driving through Okigwe, Imo State, Nigeria. We were stopped at a junction when a Fulani man came to the car, introduced himself as Yusuf, a relative to Mogodi, and asked us to visit their camp. He knew about Hope Academy in Kogi State and begged us to build a school for them, there in Okigwe. More time had passed when my friend Mrs. McKay contacted me asking whether we'd built that school for the Fulani children in Okigwe. My friend's father had recently passed away; she wanted to build the Okigwe school in his memory. I phoned my Fulani colleague, Mogodi, asking about the situation in Okigwe. Mogodi advised me NOT to go there, that the area was very hostile towards Fulani. All the Okigwe Fulani had fled the area. I had to tell my friend we couldn't build a school for the Okigwe Fulani; they'd left the area and I had no idea where they'd gone. We'd need to think about another group of Fulani who might need a school. Then, THIS MORNING, our SFA staff member, Haruna, asked if on our way south, we could stop at one Fulani village near Itobe, just minutes from Hope Academy, as his friend there had told him of their hundreds of children with no school. I said sure, we could stop by. We would pick up a guide, Haruna said, as the village was hard to locate. The guide was waiting across from the tile works, along the Itobe Lokoja road. He got in the car, reached over and shook my hand. "Do you remember me?" he asked. "I'm Yusuf, the one you met in Okigwe. All of us from Okigwe had to leave the area because of persecution. We've settled in a village here. We have something like 500 children who need a school. Will you help us please?" And THAT, my friends, is a bona fide, April 2022 miracle! I would say, God REALLY wants that school in 'New Okigwe'!

City Of Refuge

The moment you give your life to Christ you become an infidel according to Islam. Islam insists upon death or rejection for any new converts. The City of Refuge is a place for Fulani people who are new converts to Christ to find a safe haven. We offer discipleship classes to build up a convert's faith in Christ. Reverend Phyllis Sortor, AKA MAMA FULANI, built a large church and 7 rooms for converts. Some converts are enrolled in school, and some we are able to employ after school hours. Funded by Schools For Africa, we train these converts in an occupation such as welding, sandals making or sowing of clothes. We have three pastors in the City Of Refuge who run the church and disciple converts. Many of the students from our nearby primary and secondary schools and their families attend the church as well. To change from Islam to Christianity is very challenging. Musa, a convert in the City Of Refuge, had cows, but the moment he denounced Islam to convert to Christianity, his family stole all the cows that were his inheritance, and chased him out of his home. He was persecuted, without shelter or food, until we brought him into the City of Refuge. Suleiman, another convert, was sent out of his village. His mother loved him dearly as her only son, so he was sent out of his village, so that the villagers would not kill him. Usman faced a great challenge when he converted to Christianity. He was cut severely with a large knife, and was left in his pools of blood to die. A Christian brother took him to hospital for treatment. God intervened, and after many days in the hospital, he began to recover, and was brought to the City of Refuge. Another convert, a Muslim woman, was received by the church after her father disowned her for the new faith she has chosen. She held on to her Christian faith, and today her son is now a pastor because she stood firm. Ahmodu gave his life to Christ, but had to run away from his home, fleeing for his life. We accepted him into the City Of Refuge, and he continued here for many months. One day he was threatened by some Muslims to change his religion, or die. His faith was not strong enough to face the challenges and he later went back to Islam. One of our converts, Hassan came to us through an evangelist. Hassan said he was a new convert, that he believes in Jesus Christ, but his parents were after his life. He asked, "Can I find a place here?" Our pastor replied, "Yes, you are now my friend." He said, "But I don't know you, I'm just seeing you for the first time." The pastor said, "Yes, in the family of Jesus Christ, there is no need to know each before becoming friends. We are family now and brothers."

COMING SOON! Carol Barrett Memorial School, Sabon Koura

A school in Sabon Koura is COMING SOON! Here's the story of how the school came to be: Solid Rock Good Life Academy was built in early 2023, when Missionary Phyllis Sortor was invited to our Security Guard Jacob’s baby dedication, and she fell in love with his church. God told her to build a permanent structure for them, as they were renting a tin building. A generous donor funded that church, then asked what else we need. We needed a SCHOOL, and he said yes to that, too! The Ardo of the village nearby is VERY supportive of the school. Ardo shared his delight with his brother who lives an hour away. The brother persistently requested a school for 3 years. We finally visited him, and couldn't turn him down! We hope to build Ardo's brother a school in 2026/2027! THIS will be Sabon Koura, or the Carol Barrett Memorial School. In 2025, SFA Secretary Carisa Haven and friend Carol Barrett visited Nigeria, and this village. God spoke to Carol's heart, and she began raising the $60,000 needed to build this large school. Carol passed away shortly thereafter, but her friends and family have continued to raise the funds for this school.

Missionary Phyllis Sortor was invited to our Security Guard Jacob’s baby dedication, and she fell in love with his church. God told her to build a permanent structure for them, as they were renting a tin building. A generous donor funded that church, then asked what else we need. We needed a SCHOOL, and he said yes to that, too! The church was totally willing to partner with the Fulani school! The Ardo of the village nearby is VERY supportive of the school. His children are all there, and he and wife are taking afternoon classes! Ardo shared his delight with his brother who lives an hour away. The brother persistently requested a school for 3 years. We finally visited him, and couldn't turn him down! We hope to build Argo's brother a school in 2026/2027! The school land is VERY ROCKY! Men had to build large fires over the rocks, then manually crack and hammer the rock down to a level grade. Hence the name SOLID ROCK SCHOOL! There are zinc mines all around this school, which CAN be a danger to the children, who are small enough to fall down the mine holes! There is also a bird sanctuary nearby, much to Phyllis's delight!
